Why You Need Hyaluronic Acid In Your Skincare Routine

There are three surefire steps to investigating if a new beauty trend is really a big deal. One: check the magazines. If it’s in there, it must be worth mentioning. Bonus points if it gets its own spread. Two: quiz your most beauty savvy friend. Well, by quiz we actually mean drop it real casually in the middle of conversation, asking them if they’ve heard, so you seem as if you already know. Chances are they already have the product you were curious about, and won’t stop raving about it to anyone and everyone. Third, stalk the beauty editors. If it’s a serious trend, you’ll be guaranteed to find it will be splashed all over their personal Instagram profiles, praising it to no end.

This winter, Hyaluronic acid is the real big deal. The acid that isn’t really an acid. The hydrating superhero. It’s on every shelf, every label of every brand, from your local Boots to that cute boutique in Marylebone you’ve always meant to visit. As we’re hardcore HA lovers here at CBCO, it’s music to our ears.

Don’t worry if you’re confused, we’re not leaving you in the dust. It’s way too good not to share, so here’s the need-to-know basics about this season’s miracle molecule:

What is it?

First things first. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in our skin’s structure and connective tissue in our bodies. It acts as a cushioning and lubrication agent for our joints, nerves, hair, skin and eyes. Even better, it’s responsible for keeping our skin plump, soft and supple. Of course, it’s no surprise that as we age our ability to produce HA declines, which means that we are more prone to dryness, fine lines, wrinkles and saggy skin. Yup. Lovely stuff.

How does it work?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural retainer of water and moisture, and can hold up to almost 1000 times its weight in water. It encourages the cells in your dermis to hold on to their water content, which results in firmer, bouncier, plumper skin.

What are the benefits?

Long story short, it’s a quick shot of much-needed hydration deep into your skin. It balances out moisture levels in drier skin, and keeps your skin plump. Used long term, it can ward off wrinkles, which, by the way, typically crops up when collagen production decreases and your skin is dehydrated.

If we’ve sold it to you (which we’re sure we have), then keep scrolling for the best natural products with hyaluronic acid in them!
