New year! Same us- but brighter!
If like us, your skin has not been loving the weather in London and in many ways reflecting the dullness of the miserable sky, we have some tips for you and some key ingredients that you can look out for. We called upon our in house chemist, Anthonia, to call out a few ingredients that are the key to brightening; she gave us a very sciencey answer that we will break down for you.
Vitamin C
Let’s begin with Vitamin C, the OG in the brightening game. Vitamin C is a powerhouse antioxidant, that protects against free radicals and also has a brightening effect. Fun fact (or not so fun): we as humans cannot produce Vitamin C, however other organisms can! That is why we have to ingest Vitamin C or apply it topically to reap the benefits. Vitamin C shields and protects from external stressors by neutralising the production of free radicals. It is best to apply Vitamin C in the morning before you step out for the best protection. Vitamin C also helps with hyperpigmentation and anti ageing as it promotes collagen, as well as decreasing inflammation. Vitamin C gives you that all around brightening glow (so you can beat the January blues)
We have a few Vitamin C recommendations to brighten up your day! We enjoy using the Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye cream but we’re more so in the market for a Vitamin C infused day cream (hint hint).
Caffeine
Now onto some superfoods with brightening benefits. Anthonia flagged caffeine and matcha as star brightening ingredients. Matcha is a form of green tea, that we are very familiar with, as it was a key ingredient in our Sunday DIY face masks. Both caffeine and matcha are great antioxidants!
Caffeine is a diuretic that helps to get rid of puffiness which is why it is often found in eye creams; there is some research into caffeine being able to stimulate blood flow under the skin to brighten (this is more of a secondary benefit). We both enjoy using caffeine eye creams from The Ordinary and The Inkey List.
Matcha
Matcha has 20 times more powerful antioxidants than Vitamin C and 50 times more powerful antioxidants than Vitamin E- a true superfood! The antioxidant ability comes from proanthocyanidins, matcha also contains polyphenols which have been linked to reducing pore size and smoothing skin.
If only we could find all these star ingredients curated into a lovely textured day cream…
Where is my eye cream ?
Eye creams. Probably one of our biggest requests to date is for BYBI to release an eye cream- fear not we are developing one. Although we are still on a quest to find our perfect eye cream, we typically look for an eye cream to aid with dark circles and fine lines. However we have not found our saviour eye cream and are open to suggestions. (Dominika has tried under eye patches but she is moving away from using them as they are not susty, therefore has given them up.)
