Every skincare expert we’ve ever met has the same bit of all-time beauty advice: wear sunscreen 👩🏽‍🔬 Rain or shine, overcast or drizzly, blazing heat or snow – you need to be wearing it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. SPF is the only thing that will truly protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays – both of which are responsible for accelerated ageing of the skin as well as much more sinister damage. But did you know that there are two types of sunscreen on the market – chemical and mineral?
🌤Chemical sunscreen works by including ingredients such as oxybenzone that trigger a chemical reaction in the skin, which stops burning. Essentially the rays are absorbed into your skin and are then converted into heat and released.
☀️Mineral sunscreen contains (you guessed it) mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which work to physically shield the rays. They sit on top of skin acting as a blocker and deflecting them, meaning they’re not absorbed at all.
🌞It’s widely debated which is better but we choose mineral every time. Why?
🌼Mineral doesn’t allow the rays to be absorbed at all. That seems like a stronger and more robust way of protecting against them in our eyes.
🍋The idea of a chemical reaction going off right on our skin is a bit creepy and weird. The ingredients used are clearly pretty potent to cause this, which is concerning. We’re not the only ones to think this; Hawaii recently banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, the most common chemical ingredients, due to their harmful impact on the coral reef.
🏖Mineral however has historically been thick, white and pasty which puts people off. Formulations have really advanced recently though so it’s no longer hard to find a great mineral SPF. We asked you guys recently and some of your favourite brands are saltandstone, madaracosmetics, coola.
